Defending champions Kaizer Chiefs beat Mamelodi Sundowns 2-0 on Sunday in the DStv Diski Challenge to move closer to the leaders, but they are still some way behind Orlando Pirates at the top of the table.
The game started with both sides going at each other, both defences were tested by no clear opportunities inside the first 10 minutes.
Neo Bohloko split the defence with a pinpoint pass, sending Naledi Hlongwane charging into the box. Hlongwane showcased his composure, effortlessly slotting the ball past the Sundowns goalkeeper. Chiefs take the lead inside 15 minutes.
The partnership of Hlongwane and Bohloko caused havoc for Sundowns as Chiefs nearly doubled the lead inside the 20th minute, but Sundowns ‘ defence remained resilient.
Sundowns had their first clear opportunity in the 25th minute when Takalani Mazhamba charged off his line to save a one-on-one chance from Bennet Makoena
Amakhosi went into the break leading 1-0 and controlled the first half.
The second half began with Sundowns looking to get the equaliser. But Mazhamba was the difference after making a crucial save 10 minutes into the second half.
Sundowns kept on piling pressure, there was a penalty shout in the 65th minute after Oarabile Booysen went down in the box but referee waved play-on.
Chiefs wrapped up the result in the 87th minute, when Kamogelo Malefo won the ball on the halfway line and caught Nqobani Biyela out of position, and his composed finish wrapped up the game.
The victory moves Chiefs to 26 points, but they remain in 5th. Pirates increased their lead to seven over second-placed Sundowns with their win over Marumo Gallants on Saturday.
