AEL Limassol of Luther Singh and Thapelo Maseko knocked Mihlali Mayambela’s Aris Limassol out of the Cyprus Cup.
In the Limassol derby, AEL came tops with a late goal from the penalty spot by Sérgio Conceição. The battle involved three South African players, two from AEL in Singh and Maseko, and one from Aris in Mayambela.
Both Singh and Mayambela started, but the Aris winger only lasted for 46 minutes before he was replaced by Suriname international midfielder Jaden Montnor. Meanwhile, Maseko’s debut was delayed as he didn’t play a part in the encounter after just arriving last week.
The on-loan winger from Sundowns could make his debut this coming weekend when AEL will face 11th-placed Anorthosis Famagusta away from home in a league match.
For the second consecutive season Aris failed to reach the quarter-final of the Cyprus Cup. On the other hand AEL Limassol reaches quarter-final for the second successive season but they were knocked out in the Last 8 last time around.
AEL have won the tournament seven times, while Aris are actually yet to lift the trophy.
