Banyana Off To Winning Start At COSAFA Tournament

Banyana Banyana opened their 2025 COSAFA Women’s Championship with a 2-0 win over Malawi at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.

The result means they are second in Group A on the same number of points with Angola who defeated Lesotho 3-1 in an earlier kick-off.

Coach Dr Desiree Ellis named a fairly young squad for the encounter with most regulars like Andile Dlamini, Refiloe Jane and Bambanani Mbane not considered in the match day squad.

Nthabiseng Majiya missed a chance to give her side the lead inside the opening five minutes but hit the side of the net.

Tendai Sani could have scored for the Scorchers, but her effort went over the bar leaving the game to go into the break deadlocked at 0-0.

There were no immediate changes for both sides at the start of the second half.

There was a big opportunity 10 minutes into the second stanza with a combination play between Nonhlanhla Mthandi and Majiya however the latter’s goal mouth effort was cleared by the Malawi defence.

Banyana won a set-piece after Bongiwe Thusi was fouled three minutes after the hour mark, Sinegugu Zondi found captain on the day Holweni who tapped home to break the deadlock and make it 1-0 for the host nation.

In the 91st minute, Bonolo Mokoma added South Africa’s second for a clean sheet and maximum points.

The team is next in action on Saturday against Angola.
