Loaned Or Left Permanently? Pitso Clarifies Maphathe’s Exit

Durban City interim coach Pitso Dladla has clarified the situation surrounding defender Katlego Maphathe, who recently departed the club to Upington City.

The defender had been with the KwaZulu-Natal side since the beginning of the 2024/25 season, having joined from Cape Town Spurs, who are currently competing in the ABC Motsepe League.

Maphathe played a significant role in helping the club secure promotion to the Betway Premiership after they won the Motsepe Foundation Championship last season.

During the first half of the 2025/26 campaign, he made ten appearances across all competitions — eight in the league and two in the Carling Knockout Cup.

Dladla explained that, to the best of his knowledge, the right-back joined Upington City on loan in the Championship.

Maphathe is set to face his parent club, Durban City, in the Round of 16 of the Nedbank Cup this coming weekend.

“Sometimes, as coaches, you get involved in the early stages of negotiations [for players’ transfers],” said Dladla.

“In the early stages, I was of an idea that he’s going to be loaned. When the negotiations were finished, I don’t know what was the final decision.

“But I think he’s on loan.”
