Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso has shared his thoughts on Monnapule Saleng after the attacker made his debut for the club.
The left-footed forward featured for the first time since completing his January move, having initially been sidelined by a quad injury he arrived with at Chloorkop.
Saleng came off the bench in Sundowns’ 3-1 win over Sekhukhune United in the Betway Premiership on Sunday, impressing in his cameo and setting up Iqraam Rayners for his opening goal.
Cardoso expressed satisfaction with what he has seen from Saleng in both matches and training, noting his versatility and hinting he could be deployed in roles other than the wing.
“Saleng did well,” said Cardoso in the post-match press conference.
“Saleng is a player that has high quality and outcome on those duels. He can play outside right/left.
“Fortunately, I just started working with him because he was injured but he made a fantastic recovery.
“We never wanted to put pressure on his comeback and we still must not. Obviously, he’s recovered but he’s getting conditioning and understanding what we want from him.
“He can play outside or inside. So don’t get surprised if you see him having different positions on the pitch. Today, we needed to keep the structure because [Khuliso] Mudau was also struggling with ankle.
“We didn’t want him to expose him in attack, and we didn’t want to expose ourselves in defence. We decided to put him [Saleng] on the right side and it worked.”
