Sekhukhune United coach Eric Tinkler has reiterated his side’s main target despite their apparent involvement in the title race.
Babina Noko suffered a 3-1 defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns in the Betway Premiership on Sunday at Loftus Versfeld Stadium.
The loss left them third on the table with 32 points from 19 matches.
Asked whether the result affected their title ambitions, Tinkler stressed that finishing in the top three — not winning the league — remains their primary objective.
“No, different to what I said right at the beginning of the season. Target and objective is top three. You’re the guys who are talking about leagues,” said Tinkler.
“I’m talking about top three. That’s my mandate, top three. One in two, not a possibility perhaps? If we won today, would we be competing for the league? Yes.
“Yes, but my mandate hasn’t changed. Top three. Nothing says we can’t now go win the next two games and close that gap.
“Every single game we go into, we plan and prepare to win that game. I don’t have the luxury of planning ahead and saying, ‘oh no, yeah, I can get a point, maybe over there I can get no points and then over there, three points.’
“No. These three points today [would be] important. Why? Because our target is top three. The sooner we can create a gap between ourselves and everybody else to reach top three, the better.”
