Polokwane City head coach Phuti Mohafe says Orlando Pirates will not become the 2025/26 Betway Premiership champions if they continue playing like they did against his side in midweek.
Pirates were wasteful in front of goal against Rise and Shine at the old Peter Mokaba Stadium, however won the match 2-1 thanks to a late Patrick Maswanganyi goal.
The result ensured that the Sea Robbers stayed on top of the league log equal on 44 points with Mamelodi Sundowns right on their heels both from 19 matches.
Abdeslam Ouaddou and his charges have spoken openly about giving the league title a real go, having finished second to Sundowns in the last two seasons and by a big point margin as well.
It has been well over a decade since Pirates won the league and with how they started the current campaign they believe they can dethrone the Brazilians who have won it eight times in a row.
Meanwhile, Mohafe noted how his side made it difficult for Pirates to score and how the match deserved a draw, insisting the Buccaneers will not be champions if they play like they did on Wednesday.
“You see if they can continue playing like this, I don’t see them winning the championship,” said Mohafe.
“If they will play the way they played today, and not knowing that, maybe our tactical aspect, or our tactical acumen were spot on.
“Maybe we planned very well for them and that is why they struggled with us today. But with the performance that they did today I don’t see them becoming the champions.”
