Former Kaizer Chiefs winger Jabu Mahlangu is not convinced enough that his former club can return to CAF Champions League football next season.
Amakhosi currently find themselves in sixth position on the Betway Premiership standings having dropped 12 out of 12 points in their last four league outings.
They have lost five matches on the trot across all competitions, with their latest defeat coming at the hands of Richards Bay where they lost 1-0 mid last week.
The Glamour Boys are on 30 points after 18 matches but have two matches in hand on the likes of Sekhukhune United (3rd), Durban City (4th) and AmaZulu in fifth.
Despite the optimistic feeling from Football Director Kaizer Motaung Jnr, ‘Shuffle’ has however advised the club to manage their expectations and rather focus on qualifying for the top eight, a position they have failed to reach over the past two seasons.
“Firstly, it’s heartwarming to hear the Sporting Director being ambitious talking the way he is talking,” Mahlangu said on SABC Sport.
“That there is still high hope, they still want to compete against the best in the African continent.
“The mandate that he has given them [Cedric Kaze & Khalil Ben Youseff], for me that’s where I have a worry. Is it realistic? Personally, I don’t think it’s realistic.
“Right now, for this season, Chiefs must just fight to be back in the top eight, and then build from there.”
