Downs Overtake Pirates To Move Top

Mamelodi Sundowns leapfrogged Orlando Pirates into top spot after a hard fought 2-0 win over ORBIT College at Olympia Park on Tuesday night.

Miguel Cardoso rang six changes to his line-up from their 2-1 win over Golden Arrows.

Kegan Johannes, Keanu Cupido, Fawaaz Basadien, Monnapule Saleng, Miguel Reisinho and Marcelo Allende replaced Grant Kekana, Khulumani Ndamane, Aubrey Modiba, Teboho Mokoena, suspended Jayden Adams and Tashreeq Matthews.

Arthur Sales could’ve given the visitors a four-minute lead but his header from close range agonisingly missed the target by a whisk.

In the ninth minute, Iqraam Rayners thought he had given Sundowns the lead with a tap in from close range but was flagged offside.

The Bafana Bafana striker had a chance with just a minute before the halftime whistle went to open the scoring but saw his header sail over the Orbit goal.

Sundowns were 1-0 to the good just two minutes into the second stanza as Nuno Santos’ header found Reisinho who made no mistake placing his low shot passed Mwenya Chibwe.

The visitors were awarded a penalty in the 57th minute after Ramahlwe Mphahlele brought down Khuliso Mudau in the box.

Rayners stepped up to make it 2-0 for his third goal in as many matches and give Masandawana the advantage on the night.

Maximum points for the defending champions moved them to 47 points, three ahead of Pirates who dropped to second place.

The Buccaneers are in action on Wednesday at the Orlando Amstel Arena against Richards Bay.
