Former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Edson Castillo scored two crackers for Carabobo in their 2-1 win over Sporting Cristal in South America’s 2026 CONMEBOL Libertadores on Wednesday.

Castillo and his team however ended up on the losing side with Cristal progressing to the next round.

Castillo opened the scoring just four minutes in with a well taken scorcher from 30 yards out into the top left corner before replicating that in the 29th minute with another cracker.

The home side however struck back in the second half with Maxloren Castro grabbing a consolation in the 50th minute.

The match was decided on penalties after a 2-2 aggregate draw with Cristal edging out Carabobo 3-2 on spot kicks to advance.

Castillo, 31, joined the Glamour Boys in 2023 from Colombian side Monagas SC and despite being an important member of the squad, injury troubles halted his progress at the Naturena-based outfit.

He was part of their 2025 Nedbank Cup-winning squad after beating Orlando Pirates2-1 in the final.

Despite penning a two-year contract extension, he was surprisingly released in July 2025 and spent time in football wilderness before joining Carabobo in January this year.
