The highly anticipated Soweto Derby takes centre stage as the DStv Diski Challenge returns to our screens this weekend, set to unfold at the Princess Magogo Stadium in KwaZulu-Natal.
With a game in hand and a clear advantage at the top, Orlando Pirates are poised to make a significant push for the title. Despite coming close to clinching the DDC title in the past 10 seasons, they have consistently fallen short of at the final hurdle.
Under Roscoe Kriegel’s leadership in his first season, the Buccaneers have finally secured the top spot, but their journey is far from over. With seven games remaining, including a highly anticipated match against their arch-rivals Kaizer Chiefs, Pirates are focused on maintaining their momentum.
Despite Chiefs’ current struggles, having been knocked out of form after loaning out key players in January, they will undoubtedly aim to end the season on a high note, making this derby a formality-free encounter.
Currently ranked fifth, Chiefs’ recent dip in form saw them go six games without a win. Meanwhile, Buccaneers boast the second-highest goal tally in the league with 53 goals, narrowly trailing Mamelodi Sundowns’ 60 goals.
Defensively, Buccaneers stand strong, having conceded just 14 goals, the best record in the league, while Chiefs have conceded 25. Given their recent history against Chiefs, having lost the last three encounters, Pirates are certainly looking forward to this matchup to avenge their past defeats.
As they face off against Chiefs, they will also be keeping a close eye on Sundowns, who are applying pressure from behind, as they take on Polokwane City in Limpopo. With Bennet Mokoena leading the league’s goal-scoring chart at 20 goals, Sundowns will rely heavily on him to break records.
