Ex-Pirates Coach Unveiled At New European Club

Former Orlando Pirates assistant coach Sergio Almenara has been reunited with José Riveiro at Swedish Allsvenskan outfit AIK Fotboll.

He won four trophies at the Buccaneers including two successive MTN8 titles and back-to-back Nedbank trophies.

On Friday, AIK announced the arrival of Almenara at the Swedish side where he will once again work with his trusted number one in Riveiro.

“Welcome to AIK, Sergio Almenara!

“AIK Football has reached an agreement with the Spanish coach Sergio Almenara Crispín for a contract as assistant coach to the club’s head coach José Riveiro. The agreement is valid from April 1, 2026, and is signed through the 2028 season,” the club said on X.

“We are very happy to be able to welcome Sergio as part of AIK’s coaching staff. His skills and personality are an excellent addition to the current staff. Sergio’s specialized skills in individual player development and set pieces will add significant added value to our business, ” added Miika Takkula,AIK Football’s Head of Recruitment.

“Sergio comes most recently from Danish FC Copenhagen where he was assistant coach to Jacob Neestrup. Between March 2025 and January 2026, he was also an assistant coach for the Finnish men’s national team, where he was responsible for set pieces.”

Almenara expressed his gratitude upon joining the club describing them as a historic club.

“A historic club, passionate supporters and an exciting challenge ahead. I’m grateful for the trust and ready to give everything from day one.”
