Sundowns Close Gap On Pirates

Mamelodi Sundowns narrowed the gap at the top of the DStv Diski Challenge log to three points after winning their catch-up game against Polokwane City on Wednesday morning.

The Sundowns and Polokwane City fixture was initially supposed to be played at the end of March, but has been played this morning with Downs knowing coming to this match, anything less than a win would dent their title hopes.

It was a perfect start for the Tshwane giants as they opened the scoring in the fifth minute through Liam Marthinus. On-form Oarabile Booysen doubled the lead after 26 minutes to ease Masandawana’s nerves.

The game looked done and dusted as Sundowns went into the break leading, but knew that they needed more goals as goal difference could become the decider in the league.

Rise and Shine pulled one back in the 63rd minute, leading to a nervy ending of the game, as Sundowns could not afford to drop points in this game to keep the pressure on Pirates.

Sundowns, though, finally sealed the win and calmed their nerves in the dying minutes of the game when Bennet Mokoena made it 3-1 to secure a massive three points.

Both Sundowns and Pirates have three games remaining. The Buccaneers will face Magesi FC (14) and Chippa United (16), while Downs will lock-horns with Richards Bay (9), Kaizer Chiefs (4) before both teams will meet each other for a potential title decider on the final day of the season.

Mokoena now sits on 22 goals in the Diski Challenge this season, just three short of Boitumelo Radiopane’s record from the 2021/22 season.
