Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso has made crucial pleas to the Premier Soccer League [PSL].

The Portuguese tactician has been in South Africa for a season and a half, spearheading the Brazilians after replacing Manqoba Mngqithi.

During his time at the club, he has won the Betway Premiership and, most recently, the CAF Champions League campaign.

Cardoso says a few changes must be made by the South African league’s governing body to improve football development.

He believes the league must introduce an official match ball for every team to use, ensuring everyone adapts to the same standard.

He also questioned why teams are allowed to change their home venues at their will, particularly when playing against the bigger clubs.

Lastly, he stated that the PSL must make it mandatory to water the pitch and cut the grass to a specific level, allowing football to flow more naturally and making it easier for all teams to play.

“Despite I see that the South African football, I feel that there’s things that can be done to make [football better],” Cardoso said in the Sundowns’ Pitchside Podcast.

“One simple example, why there isn’t a ball that is an official match ball that everyone plays with.

“When you play you will play better because you know the ball. Why there’s possibilities for teams to change venues just because they are playing Sundowns, Pirates or Chiefs when we should be playing in same conditions.

“This is simple, ‘your venue is this one, your venue that one and you cannot change it even if you want to play in a big or small stadium’.

“You must water your pitches, so that the footballer is quicker and simple even when you play matches like Champions League. And you have to play in those conditions because it’s mandatory to water the pitch and cut the grass.

“And this is the development of the game and the direction that South Africa must have. And the coaches mustn’t complain, I would like the game to develop here.”
