Bafana Bafana winger Thapelo Maseko admits it has been tough for them after the 2-0 loss against co-hosts Mexico in the first game.

Bafana had a poor performance against co-hosts Mexico in their opening, where they didn’t create any big chances and only had three total shots against 16 shots for Mexico and ended up losing 2-0.

Millions of South Africans were left angry, questioning the team setup and the lineup that started the game, which led to them even questioning the ability of the players and head coach Hugo Broos, who has led the side to their first World Cup showpiece since 2010 when they qualified as hosts.

Maseko, who’s on loan at Cyprus side AEL Limassol, explained that they had to stay off social media after that game to avoid the noise, but after the 1-1 draw against Czechia, they believe they can do it (qualify).

“It’s been tough for us, honestly. Tough. We had to log off our social media for quite some time before today’s [Thursday’s] game, but yeah, I think today’s performance just proved that we can do it,” Maseko told the media.

Bafana have fate in their hands against South Korea in the last game, as they need to win to keep their progression chances alive.

Broos’s side can no longer finish top of the table after Mexico won 1-0 against South Korea but can still qualify as group runners-up or as one of the best eight third-placed teams.
