South African tactician Rulani Mokwena has been appointed as the new head coach of Egyptian giants Pyramids FC who parted ways with Krunoslav Jurčić on Friday evening.

Mokwena was most recently at the helm of Libyan outfit Al Ittihad SC, but widespread media reports have suggested that he parted ways with the club barely just four months after joining the side, opting to part ways with the club to seek a new challenge.

Since his arrival at Ittihad in March this year, Mokwena has not had the best of runs after his unceremonious exit from Algerian outfit MC Alger.

He has had a modest run at the club, and after favourable results for a few matches, the end of the campaign did not yield any positivity.

Mokwena’s charges failed to secure a spot in CAF inter-club competitions for the upcoming term with the nail in the coffin being the 2-0 defeat to arch-rivals Al Ahli Tripoli in the Libyan Cup final.

Since his departure from Mamelodi Sundowns, the 39-year-old has had three short coaching stints. He joined Morocco’s Wydad Athletic Club before his move to Alger and then Ittihad.

The former Wydad mentor has now taken over the reins at Pyramids who won the CAF Champions League crown in 2024/25 at the expense of Sundowns.
