Marumo Gallants new head coach Phuti Mohafe has opened up about on reasons he left former side Polokwane City.

Mohafe spent the last three seasons with Rise and Shine, where he started as an assistant coach than eventually promoted to the hot seat. During the period, he also helped the Limpopo side finish inside the top eight for three terms in a row.

Under Mohafe’s guidance, City was able to produce mainstay national team players most notably Oswin Appollis who has since joined Soweto giants Orlando Pirates and Thabang Matuludi, with two other players on the fringe side for the national side.

Mohafe explained to iDiski Times journalist Lethabo Kganyago in edition 264 of the newspaper that it all started with a conversation between his representative and the Gallants chairman.

“First and foremost, I can say the chairman of Marumo, together with my representative, they met and they discussed about me joining Marumo,” Mohafe told iDiski Times.

“They found it very, very interesting to say, let’s bring him to Marumo. And for me to be at Polokwane City for three consecutive seasons, qualifying for the top eight, I needed a new challenge, and hopefully, I think that Marumo will be that challenge.

“But with the team that plays a different style of football from what I’m used to, I have to maybe tweak it here and there, so that we can balance both the possession and the way I play.

“It became a new beginning for me and the club, and the conversations that the chairman and my representative had is the one that swayed me to Marumo.”
