Jozi Masters, a team mainly made up of Orlando Pirates Legends, beat Kaizer Chiefs Legends in the curtain raiser of the Toyota Cup at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium.
Siphiwe Tshabalala turned back the years, running past nearly the whole Jozi Masters defence, before David Radebe put a shot over the bar.
Itumeleng Khune kept the scoreline at 0-0 with some superb saves in the first stanza, including denying Tebogo Langerman from long range.
The second half was disrupted by changes on both sides, with neither team able to create clear-cut chances.
In the 48th minute, Jozi Masters had a great free-kick opportunity but Mpho Makola’s attempt hit the wall.
Derrick Spencer, Mandla Masango, Reneilwe Letsholonyane and Collins Mbesuma were among the names who got a runout in the second half while Daniel Akpeyi replaced Khune in goal for the Chiefs legends.
Mbesuma had a shot on target in the 53rd minute but it was saved by Jackson Mabokwane.
The game headed to penalties after both sides couldn’t be separated after 60 minutes.
Mabokwane denied Thuso Phala in the first kick, while Abednigo Netshodwe opened for the Jozi Masters. Lebo Manyana’s attempt was also saved by Mabokgwane, before Akpeyi saved from Jozi Masters.
Yeye then had a chance to equalise but put his spot-kick over the bar, which saw the Jozi Masters end up winning the game 1-0 on penalties.
