Stellenbosch FC coach Gavin Hunt has given an update on the situation of Langelighle Phili, who has been heavily linked with Kaizer Chiefs.

On Wednesday, the public broadcaster reported that had taken “a significant step” in negotiations over Phili.

Phili, 21, had a great breakout campaign last season, scoring nine goals across 39 appearances, including seven in the Betway Premiership.

Chiefs have been keen on the player, with a swap deal with Ashley du Preez, another player plus cash said to be discussed, with Stellies understood to have slapped a R16 million price tag on the winger.

On Thursday at the league’s launch ahead of the 2026/27 campaign, Hunt admitted he’d love to keep the player, but contractual matters playing a role, too.

“Obviously you don’t want to lose the player,” he said when asked about the 21-year-old.

“He’s one of the hottest properties in South African football, right now. You don’t want to lose him.

“But I mean circumstances, contractual circumstances and all those type of things come into play.

“It’s been a lot of media speculation and I’m sure the next day or two we’ll hear some more…”
