Stellenbosch FC head coach Gavin Hunt is of the opinion that their first Betway Premiership game of the season should’ve been called off following Jayden Adams’ untimely passing who was the club’s academy product.
Hunt’s charges suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to AmaZulu FC in a home-away fixture at Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium in Durban, a week after Adams’ funeral who sadly passed away in mid-July just after returning from the FIFA World Cup.
Adams spent over 10 years at Stellies having arrived as a kid where he represented the club in all junior structures before making his senior debut in August 2020.
Five years later, he joined African Champions Mamelodi Sundowns, in a short period, he won the Betway Premiership and CAF Champions League. His death shocked the entire world as he was seen as a player with great potential.
Sundowns had their opening league game postponed against Marumo Gallants, and Hunt felt their opening game against AmaZulu was supposed to be postponed as they were not mentally ready, and most players and staff members were close to Adams as he spent over a decade at the club.
“Thought the first game should have been called off, because of Jayden Adams. He was at the club for 12 years,” Hunt told the media.
“He’s been there [Sundowns] for one year. They got their game called off. We should have had our game called off.
“Everybody was like shocked; Devin [Titus] was devastated. This one, they were all, everybody was devastated, and it was like a total shock, and the game was on us.
“And maybe we should have had the game called off but we went ahead and played, and we weren’t ready for that first game, even though we were very, very unfortunate.
“But I love to play two games a week, three games a week. You know, but this week now can give us just a little bit of time to train and [work on things].”
