Five teams were victorious in the opening round of the Motsepe Foundation Championship that kicked off on Friday.
On Friday, the recently named Real Native FC, formerly Casric Stars, scored a late penalty to win 2-1 at home against Cape Town City, while it ended 1-1 between Venda Football Club and Lerumo Lions.
It was a fairy-tale start to professional football for Hope Football Club, who beat AmaTuks 1-0 at Athlone Stadium on Saturday with former Stellenbosch DStv Diski Challenge star Tauriq Gamildien on the scoresheet, while fellow debutants NW University drew 1-1 at home to Upington City.
Kavendree Makhene scored as Leicesterford City won their home game 1-0 against recently relegated Orbit College, but the other team that went down from the Betway Premiership, Magesi, started with a 1-0 away win against Midlands Wanderers, with Nyakala Raphadu scoring.
Vusimuzi Vilakazi’s Highbury team also won on the road, beating the Bees 2-1, while it ended 2-2 between Hungry Lions and Gomora United.
