CAF Release Statement On AFCON Chaos

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) have condemned the “unacceptable behavior” from some players and officials during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final.

Chaos erupted on the pitch in injury-time, when referee Jean-Jacques Ngambo Ndala awarded Morocco a contentious 95th minute penalty.

After Senegal themselves had a goal ruled out in injury-time, parts of the Lions of Teranga squad decided to leave the pitch, with coach Pape Thiaw appearing to call them off.

However, Sadio Mane went into the dressing to recall his teammates, who eventually came back, before Edouard Mendy saved Brahim Diaz’s panenka penalty to force extra-time, where Pape Gueye scored the only goal of the match.

CAF have now released a statement on the ugly scenes, saying they will review the footage and “appropriate action to be taken against those found guilty”.

“The Confédération Africaine de Football (“CAF”) condemns the unacceptable behaviour of some players and officials during the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025 Final between Morocco and Senegal in Rabat last night,” read the statement.

“CAF strongly condemns any inappropriate behaviour which occurs during matches, especially those targeting the refereeing team or match organizers.

“CAF is reviewing all footage and will refer the matter to competent bodies for appropriate action to be taken against those found guilty.”
