Stellenbosch FC’s head coach, Gavin Hunt has expressed his opinion on CAF’s shock decision to declare Morocco winners of the AFCON final against Senegal.
The 2025 AFCON final between Morocco and Senegal, watched by millions, took place in Morocco two months ago.

Senegal scored in injury-time of the second half, but the goal was disallowed after VAR review. Morocco were then awarded a penalty towards even later in injury-time, sparking chaos, and Senegal walked off the pitch before the penalty was taken.
After around 15 minutes, Senegal returned to the pitch intending to finish the game. Morocco and Real Madrid star Brahim Diaz took the penalty but missed it, sending the game to extra-time.
Four minutes into extra-time, Villarreal and Senegal Pape Gueye midfielder scored the only goal of the match, securing Senegal’s victory.
Although the trophy handover was completed, Morocco appealed the game, citing Senegal’s walk-off as grounds for disqualification. This week’s verdict from CAF’s Appeal Board ruled that Senegal “forfeited” the match and declared Morocco 3-0 winners of the final, thus declaring them the 2025 AFCON champions.
Hunt believes the matter should have been resolved on the night of the final, emphasizing that the rules clearly state that walking off the pitch is not permissible.
“It should’ve been sorted out on the day of the final,” Hunt stated.
“Once you leave the field, you can’t leave the field, once you leave the field, the rules are clear but to do it now, geez…”
