Mourinho ‘Surprised’ By African Giants

Former Manchester United and Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho was left surprised by Egypt’s early exit at the Africa Cup of Nations, according to his former assistant Ricardo Formosinho.

The former Future coach worked with his countryman at Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur before their’s paths split, with Mourinho moving to AS Roma, where he was sacked in January.

Mourinho, though, has always followed his fellow countryman, including Rui Vitoria, who was sacked by Egypt after being knocked out in the Round of 16, losing 8-7 on penalties.

“Mourinho was surprised by what happened to Egypt in the AFCON,” Formosinho told Al Hayah TV channel as per Kingfut.

“He closely follows football globally, including in Egypt, and tells me he admires some players there.”

Formosinho also discussed the appointment of discussed the sacking of Vitoria, who was already replaced with Hossam Hassan.

“I don’t know how Egypt appeared in this manner because they have many talented players,” he aded.

“Although Rui Vitória is an outstanding coach, football sometimes presents surprises.”

“I have followed Hossam Hassan’s tenure as the Egyptian national team coach. I don’t know him as a coach, but I know he was a great player.

“I don’t anticipate what he will do with the team.”

Egypt return to action in March when the qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup continue with a home clash with Burkina Faso.
