Regragui – SA Can Win AFCON

Morocco head coach Walid Regragui says Bafana Bafana have the capabilities of winning the Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.

The Atlas Lions boss, who led them to a historic 2022 FIFA World Cup last-four berth, was speaking ahead of their fixture against 2023 AFCON hosts Ivory Coast in Abidjan.

With Morocco drawn in Group F with DR Congo, Zambia and Tanzania on Thursday, he warned that it could be a tournament where the ‘outsiders’ thrive.

The North Africans, the hosts, Nigeria, Algeria are among the early favourites for the upcoming showpiece, but Regragui says they need to exercise caution.

“In the African Cup, you have every team that can win the African Cup, also South Africa, when I travelled there I lost [to Bafana Bafana], now you don’t have easy games anymore,” the former Wydad coach said.

“For the Morocco team, Inshallah, we’ll try to do our best [to win the competition] the same like the World Cup, I think many teams are outsiders to win [the AFCON].”

Morocco are ranked number one in Africa ahead of the binneal event set to take place in West African between 12 January and 11 February 2024.
