Watford Release Sarr For AFCON After Senegal Row

With the African Cup of Nations kicking off in less than a week, English Premier League side Watford has released Ismaila Sarr to join Senegal ahead of the tournament.

The Senegalese Football Federation confirmed the winger left London for Cameroon on Tuesday after Watford were initially blocking his release.

The Premier League side were accused of refusing to release Sarr for Africa’s upcoming elite tournament, with Senegal stating they will report the club to FIFA.

Sarr has been sidelined with a knee injury that he picked up in November last year and The Hornets had invited Senegal to send their own doctor to assess the injury.

However, Fifa rules state any player called up for international duty must be released, even if injured, so they can be assessed by the country’s own medical staff.

Watford had already written headlines after a similar dispute with Nigeria for reportedly blocking Emmanuel Dennis from joining the Super Eagles squad for AFCON.

Senegal were drawn in Group B with Zimbabwe, Guinea and Malawi, and they will come up against the Warriors on Monday, 10 January at Bafoussam Omnisport Stadium Kouekong.
