Mamelodi Sundowns have won the inaugural African Football League title and earned a lofty $4 million check along the way.
Rulani Mokwena’s men beat Wydad Athletic Club 2-0 at Loftus Versfeld on Sunday and 3-2 on aggregate to lift their third continental title after the 2016 CAF Champions League and the 2017 CAF Super Cup.
Masandawana opened the deadlocked in injury-time in the first half, when Peter Shalulile scored the opener in his first start since injury.
Aubrey Modiba made it 2-0 in the second half, to put Sundowns 3-2 ahead on aggregate and the home side never let it slip against to win the inaugural AFL tournament.
The win caps an incredible AFL campaign by Sundowns, who went unbeaten through the tournament and knocked out Petro de Luanda as well as CAF Champions League winners Al Ahly before beating Wydad.
With the win, Sundowns have not only secured bragging rights on the continent, but also bagged a whopping R74 million. Runners-up Wydad, meanwhile, will receive R55.6 million for finishing second.
All the AFL prize money, as confirmed by CAF:
- $4 000 000 (R74 million) for the Winner
- $3 000 000 (R55.6 million) for the Runner-up
- $1 700 000 (R31.5 million) for each of the Semi-finalists
- $1 000 000 (R18.5 million) for each of the Quarter-finalists
