Al Ahly Into AFL Semi

Al Ahly booked their place in the semi-finals of the African Football League on the away-goal rule following a 1-1 draw at Borg El Arab Stadium in Egypt.

Al Ahly started on the front foot, pushing Simba back and looking for a goal after the first leg had ended 2-2.

But the Tanzania giants stood firm and looked well-organised at the back. After 15 minutes, Kahraba took a nice a shot from outside the box, but it didn’t trouble Simba goalkeeper Ally Salim as it went over the bar.

The Red Devils kept on knocking and thought they finally broke the deadlock after 28 minutes but the goal by Kahraba was ruled offside.

Two minutes before half-time Percy Tau took a shot, which deflected and just went wide of the post as the first half ended goalless.

The second half started with a slow pace, with the score remaining goalless which would’ve meant that Al Ahly progressed on away goals.

In the 60th minute, the Egyptian champions had the ball in the back of the next again but Kahraba was ruled offside once more.

As Al Ahly turned out wasteful in front of goal, they left space behind their midfield and Simba took a surprise lead through Sadio Kanoute with 20 minutes to play.

The 11-time CAF Champions League winners, though, piled one the pressure and were rewarded after 77 minutes when Kahraba had the ball in the back of the net for a third time, and this time it counted following a good assist from Tunisian left-back Ali Maaloul.

The game finished 1-1, which meant that the Red Devils went through on the away goal rule, and Al Ahly could face Mamelodi Sundowns in the last four, should Masandawana book their own semi-final ticket this evening.
