Pitso Mosimane conducting the CAF Champions League draw has been questioned by Al-Merreikh board member Haitham Kabo.
The Al Ahly head coach was an honourary guest for the Confederation of African Football for the draw in Cairo on Tuesday in which his side were drawn with Sudanese giants Al-Merreikh, Al Hilal and Mamelodi Sundowns.
“Football norms do not allow a representative of a club competing in the tournament to participate in the tournament draw,” he told Al-Mehwar TV after the draw.
Kabo went on to suggest that it’s the Group of death alongside the South African champions and record ten-time African Champions League winners.
“Our group is considered the strongest in the tournament, and Al-Ahly is present with its ten championships, which has maintained its title for the last two years and the African Super Cup as well,” he said.
“There is also the South African Sundowns team, which is a strong team, and we will play a derby match against Al-Hilal.
“We played a great match with the defending champions last year and Al-Ahly came out with a hard-earned draw, and with respect to all the achievements of all the teams, we all aspire to compete for the title.”
Both Sudanese clubs look likely to play their home games in Ethiopia as their current infrastructure doesn’t meet the required standards set out by CAF – which Kabo said the club will look into in the coming weeks.
“Our stadium is a historic stadium and witnessed great and historic matches, and the stadium is excluded from last season, and last season we played at Al Hilal Stadium,” he continued.
“But this season Al-Hilal Stadium is also excluded, but the two stadiums will be reviewed during the month of January after about a week.
“In the event that playing in the two stadiums is not accepted, we will see the available options, whether by playing in Cairo, Addis Ababa or one of the African capitals.”
