Benni Names Best Player He’s Ever Played With

Kenya national team head coach Benni McCarthy named Danish legend Michael Laudrup as the best player he has ever played with.

McCarthy remains the only South African player to have ever won the UEFA Champions League, doing so in 2004 with FC Porto. The Bafana Bafana legend started his football career at Seven Stars before joining Cape Town Spurs and then completing a move to the Netherlands with Ajax Amsterdam.

In the two seasons he played there, McCarthy had the privilege of playing with Laudrup between 1997 and 1999 just after he played for Italian giants and Spanish giants Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Speaking on Pulse Sport, McCarthy named Laudrup as the best player he ever played with.

“I had the honour to play with Michael Laudrup when I was at Ajax, a young player coming through, and you see the professionalism. He was the first ever player to have made the switch from Real Madrid to Barcelona and then back to Real Madrid,” McCarthy said.

“Never has anything like that even happened, and he was one of those players who made the switch between the two giants of world football. But just the things that he could do with a ball, the vision, the skills, and the intelligence.

“Oh wow, I’ve never seen when you were a 19-year-old kid and you play with somebody like that, like wow. If you don’t learn anything in life, then football is not for you. It’s not your sport.

“And yeah, I had the pleasure and honour to play with Michael Laudrup, and he was the greatest player I’ve played with.”
