Bucs Star Among Top Goalscorers At AFCON

Orlando Pirates striker Gabadinho Mhango has finished in joint-third spot among the top goalscorers at the African Cup of Nations, where he’s even scored more goals than Mohamed Salah.

The Malawi forward netted all three goals for the Flames during the tournament, helping them to reach the knockout stages for a first time.

Mhango also became his country’s record goalscorer in a single AFCON tournament after netting a brace against Zimbabwe and a wonder strike against Morocco in the round of 16.

As a consequence, only two players have scored more goals than Mhango at the tournament – namely Vincent Aboubakar and Karl Toko Ekambi.

Aboubaker netted eight times, the most any player has scored at an AFCON final since Ndaye Mulamba scored nine at the 1974 tournament, while Ekambi found the back of the net five times.

Behind the duo, Mhango sits in joint-third spot along with Senegal’s Sadio Mane, Morocco’s Sofiane Boufal and Mali’s Ibrahima Kone.

Top goalscorer at 2021 AFCON:

  1. Vincent Aboubakar (Cameroon) – 8 goals
  2. Karl Toko Ekambi (Cameroon) – 5 goals
  3. Gabadinho Mhango (Malawi) – 3 goals
  4. Ibrahima Kone (Mali) – 3 goals
