Chiefs Defender With Crucial Win In WC Qualifiers

Kaizer Chiefs defender Edmilson Dove and his country Mozambique picked up a crucial 3-1 win over Uganda in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Dove, 30, returned to the squad for the first time since June 2024 after recovering from his serious injury and becoming a member of Nasreddine Nabi’s Amakhosi line-up.

However, he started the Mambas clash with Uganda on the bench. The game started like a house on fire, with three goals scored in the first 16 minutes.

Mozambique went up 1-0 after just three minutes via Pepo Santos, while Muhammed Shaban equalised for the Cranes just four minutes later. But Santos restored the lead after 16 minutes and when Denis Omedi got sent off after 38 minutes the home side were in the driving seat.

Stanley Ratifo even added Mozambique’s third goal before the break in first half injury-time, and Uganda never recovered.

Dove was a second-half substitute, replacing Bruno Langa after 72 minutes to help his side secure the three points. The Mambas moved to the top of the Group G standings, with 12 points from five games.

Meanwhile, second-placed Algeria (9 points) face Morena Ramoreboli’s third-placed Botswana (6 points) on Friday.
