Bafana Bafana legend Doctor Khumalo believes that South Africa is the only African country that can match number one ranked Morocco with 100% of their European-based players.
With the current Bafana dominated by local players, Khumalo believes South African players are very talented, and countries shouldn’t label them as cry-babies when they don’t stay long overseas.
Bafana shocked the African continent in the AFCON that was hosted in Ivory Coast where they went as far as reaching the semi-final, with a squad that was dominated by local players.
They defeated the likes of Cape Verde and Morocco, who have most of their players playing in Europe, but unfortunately lost to Nigeria via penalties in the semis.
“So, we understand all those things, but let me give you the tricky part of it. We are being criticised as crying babies because we don’t have 80% of players outside South Africa,” “Mdokies” told iDiski Times editor Rob Delport in edition 183.
“Most of the African players, think South African players are crying babies. Do you think is that a fair criticism, or what? I don’t think so.
“It’s only if we can clean our house, then the mentality will be ready to go there. But on top of that, with what we have here, we are the only country in Africa, with 99% of home-brewed players, that can give it to those countries with 100% European mentality, we are the only country.
“How many players now in this squad that are playing overseas? It’s 99% home. We are the only country in Africa that can match Morocco with 100% European-based players, Guinea with 70%, all of them.
“So that’s a problem. They don’t seem to understand, ‘How do these guys do this?”
