Mamelodi Sundowns Sporting Director Flemming Berg has broken his silence on the club’s CAF Champions League success.

The Brazilians won the prestigious trophy on Sunday, defeating AS FAR Rabat 2-1 on aggregate to end their ten-year drought.

Berg has been under heavy criticism for some time, particularly following the sacking of Rulani Mokwena, with whom he was reportedly not seeing eye to eye.

The former Chelsea scout joined Masandawana in 2022, having enjoyed successful stints at the Premier League club, as Head of Elite Football Development at the Danish Football Association, and as Chief Scout at Brondby IF in Denmark.

He said the club made it clear to him that their goal was to win the CAF Champions League for a second time, having last lifted the trophy in 2016.

He acknowledged the tough season they had endured, as well as previous disappointing Champions League campaigns in which they were eliminated. However, he expressed his delight at finally achieving this objective with the team.

“Four years ago I joined this spectacular Football Club as Sporting Director. The quest of winning the clubs second CAF Champions League Trophy since the first in 2016 was outspoken and clear from the start,” said Berg on X.

“It has been a journey with ups and downs – but always strategical and determined. This season has been particularly tough and with many obstacles along the way.

“We made it and I am very proud of congratulating everyone in and around the club on being African Champions.”
