Mendy – I’m Super Proud For My Country

Senegal and Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy says he is ‘super proud’ for his country, after they beat Egypt in a penalty shootout on Sunday to lift the Africa Cup of Nations trophy for the first time in their history.

The 29-year-old missed his country’s first two games at the tournament after testing positive for Covid-19 but only conceded two goals in five matches after returning between the sticks.

Mendy, a UEFA Champions League winner last season with Chelsea, says it is an indescribable feeling being the champions of Africa.

“I can’t describe what I feel, but I’m super proud of the team, for sure,” Mendy said in the mixed zone.

“I’m super proud for my country, and I think we deserve it.

“Because we waited for this trophy for a long time and today we got this trophy so I’m really happy.”

When asked what he was thinking about during the penalty shootout, Mendy said he was only focussed on trying to make a save.

“Nothing, just to help my team,” Mendy replied.

“Because I know we have a very good shootout, so I was focused on save one penalty, and I did it so I’m happy.”

Senegal won the shootout 4-2, after it had ended goalless after 120 minutes of football.
