Mokwena Questions Players’ Mentality After Cup Exit

Wydad Athletic Club head coach Rulani Mokwena was left unhappy with the mentality of the players after they were knocked out of the Throne Cup by Moghreb Tetouan.

Considering that Wydad has never lost to Moghreb Tetouan for over 15 years in open play, the Red Castle came to this game with hope that the can secure a win and book a spot in the Throne Cup quarterfinals. But it wasn’t to be as they suffered a shocking defeat after a late goal by Ayoub Lakhal.

The Red Castle still have the Excellence Cup to fight for and a CAF Champions League spot this season after RS Berkane were confirmed as the league champions few weeks ago. Mokwena’s side saw themselves playing four draws in the last four matches which put them more under pressure.

The South African mentor was left very unhappy with the mentality of the players after Throne Cup defeat and mentioned that the game was there for them to take it, but the players didn’t take it, and it was his first time to witness what he witnessed from the players.

“We either need to change our mentality, or we need to change our players, or we need to change the coach. Because it’s not the performance it’s the mentality,” Mokwena told the media.

“I told them at halftime the game is 0-0. If you don’t take the game the opponents will take. It’s not that they want it, they saying if you don’t take it, we will take it.

“We didn’t take it. The opponents took it, and we were closer to taking it. This is the first game I am very unhappy with the players.”
