The Africa Cup of Nations appeal to a global audience has been hailed by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) president Patrice Motsepe.
Despite the recent broadcasting rights issues the previous administration suffered under with the infamous Lagerdere contract drama which saw South Africa endure a complete blackout of CAF football – an incredible 157 countries will broadcast the continental event.
With SuperSport securing the rights before the event, they join the likes of Canal+ in France, BBC, SkySports, StarTimes and ESPN among the broadcasting giants that are invested in televising the event.
“The TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations is our flagship event not only as CAF but as Africa. It is an event that is unrivalled in appeal and prestige,” Motsepe said as per the CAF official website.
Motsepe added that he isn’t ‘surprised’ by the sheer numbers the AFCON has attracted and tipped the tournament to increase in popularity.
“It’s a clear indication of the increasing popularity of African football around the world and shows clearly how AFCON has increased in stature and appeal to become one of the world’s biggest sporting events.”
