Nigeria Suffer Shock Loss

Just four days after drawing with Bafana Bafana, Nigeria suffered a shock 2-1 defeat to Benin as their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification continues to stutter.

The Super Eagles scored the opener via Raphael Onyedika after 27 minutes, but found themselves trailing at half-time.

Goals from Jodel Dossou after 37 minutes and Steve Mounie in the third minute of first-half injury-time saw the host turn the game on it’s head.

Finidi George reacted by bringing on Victor Boniface and Paul Onuachu after 51 minutes but even the two Europe-based strikers couldn’t prevent the shock defeat against 97th-placed Benin.

The side of former Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr moved to the top of Group C with seven points from four, while Nigeria stayed in second from bottom with just three points.

Hugo Broos’ men have now a huge chance to open a four-point gap to the Super Eagles should they beat bottom-placed Zimbabwe on Tuesday.
