Pitso Criticises FIFA Awards

Pitso Mosimane has criticised the FIFA awards after all three finalists for The Best FIFA Men’s Coach are once again European coaches.

The South African, who lifted five trophies since joining Al Ahly in 2020, has been overlooked for the award despite his trophy-laden start at Al Ahly.

In addition to claiming back-to-back CAF Champions League titles and back-to-back CAF Super Cups plus one Egyptian Cup, ‘Jingles’ also returned with a bronze medal from the FIFA Club World Cup – only the fourth time that an African team had finished inside the top three.

However, Mosimane didn’t make the nominees for the prestigious FIFA award, which included Antonio Conte, Hansi Flick, Lionel Scaloni, Diego Simeone, Thomas Tuchel, Pep Guardiola and Robeto Mancini.

One of the latter three will be crowned as The Best Men’s Coach at the FIFA awards on Monday evening, with Mosimane insisting the FIFA jury, who pre-selected the initial nominees, are not looking at competitions outside Europe’s top leagues.

“It is not only Africa [that is overlooked],” Mosimane said, as per the New York Times.

“It is as though, it does not mean as much when you win in the competitions that do not generate the most money, that do not have the biggest audiences.”
