Pitso Mosimane and Josef Zinnbauer have both suffered elimination from the King Salman Cup on Sunday.
Mosimane’s Al Wahda FC qualified as second from Group D after finishing behind Zinnbauer’s Raja Club Athletic following a 1-0 loss to the Moroccan side in the final group match.
Al Wahda were now facing Al-Shabab from the Saudi Pro League but suffered a 5-4 defeat on penalties.
The UAE side played with 11 vs 10 for almost 40 minutes after Iago Santos got sent off in the 27th minute, but couldn’t make their numerical advantage count and had a player themselves sent off after 67 minutes when Abdulla Al Karbi received a second yellow card.
The game went to penalties, where Al-Shabab kept a perfect record and won 5-4.
Meanwhile, Zinnbauer’s Raja lost 3-1 to Al Nassr. Raja had finished at the top of Group D ahead of Mosimane’s Wahda, but stood little chance against the Saudi giants.
Cristiano Ronaldo opened the scoring after 19 minutes before Sultan Al-Ghannam und Seko Fofana added onto the scoreline after 29 and 38 minutes.
Even though Raja pulled one back before the break via an Abdullah Madu own goal, it wasn’t enough and Ronaldo’s side progressed while Raja’s King Salman Cup journey ended.
Al Nassr will now face Iraqi side Al Shorta in the semi-final, while Al-Shabab will face Saudi big-spender Al Hilal.
Raja were the defending champions of the tournament, which is also known as Arab Club Champions Cup, after beating Al Ittihad on penalties in the final in 2021.
