Newly elected Fecafoot President Samuel Eto’o says he will restore Cameroon football to its former greatness.
Eto’o made history on Saturday by becoming only the second former footballer to assume the role as the leader of the Cameroon Football Association.
The legendary former captain and nation’s all-time record scorer ousted the outgoing president Seidou Mbombo Njoya by 43 votes against 31 in the voting process in Yaounde.
Just two years since retiring from football, his slogan of ‘restoring Cameroonian football to greatness’ rang loud amongst his supporters across the nation that is set to host the Africa Cup of Nations next month.
Eto’o was bold and issues several ambitions for the future upon his election but will have a huge responsibility to appease the public who were notably shouting ‘President Eto’o’ outside the governing body offices.
“I’ll be remembering today as one of the proudest moments of my life. I’m deeply grateful for to be elected as the new president of Fecafoot,” he wrote on social media.
“Every vote represents the energy and ambition of our football family to take our beloved sport to a level we’ve never seen before.”
The 40-year-old signalled his intention to run for the post on September 22, saying it was time to “launch the reconstruction of Cameroonian soccer” – while stating Njoya ‘failed miserably’.
Waves of support from across the world immediately poured in after the announcement was made, with Ivory Coast legend Didier Drogba among those.
“Congratulations to Samuel Eto’o for this election at the head of the Cameroonian football federation. Glimmers of hope for the rebirth of African football,” the former Chelsea striker wrote on Twitter.
