Shock U-Turn In Nigeria Coach Search

Nigeria are still without a new head coach after German tactician Bruno Labbadia has opted against becoming the new man in charge.

This comes after the Nigeria Football Federation had already announced Labbadia as new head coach.

However, despite some good initial progress, Labbadia and the NFF were not able to agree on final details reports German publication Kicker.

Nigeria now remain without a head coach just seven days before facing Benin in their Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

After the NFF had announcing Labbadia as head coach, they had also released a squad, which includes Orlando Pirates defender Olisa Ndah, but it is now questionable who picked that squad, if Labbadia hadn’t fully agreed to all contract details yet.

The Labbadia withdrawal comes as the latest setback for Nigeria after talks with Janne Andersson and Herve Renard had already broken down.

South African tactician Pitso Mosimane was also linked the Nigeria hotseat but doesn’t seem to have made the shortlist.

Nigeria recently parted ways with Finidi George who resigned from his position in the wake of the NFF announcing plans to employ a foreign technical advisor. George took charge of just two matches and was winless in both – a 1-1 draw with South Africa and 2-1 defeat at the hands of Benin.

It now remains to be seen who will be in charge for the AFCON qualifier against Benin on September 7 before they travel for an away match in Rwanda three days later.
