Referee Abongile Tom will be the only South African match official that will be in Algeria for the 2023 CHAN tournament.
The Cape Townian has been growing in the industry as we’ve seen him officiating on the African continent, specifically in CAF club competitions.
In 2019, he was selected to officiate Nedbank Cup final between Kaizer Chiefs and TS Galaxy, and made a brave decision of pointing to the spot in extra-time, which was converted by Zakhele Lepasa to hand the Rockets the trophy.
In July 2021, Tom was selected to stand in the COSAFA Cup alongside Akhona Makhalima. He then got a chance to officiate third place playoff of the showpiece.
In June 2022, the South African referee was amongst the referees selected to go represent South Africa in the African Cup Of Nations qualifiers and he was given the game between Malawi and Ethiopia.
iDiski Times has learnt that Abongile Tom has left the country this week to Algeria as the CHAN 2023 will start on 13 January and run until 4 February 2023.
He officiated 10 games this season, which includes two CAF Champions League and CAF Confederations Cup matches.
