Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos named his preliminary squad for next month’s Africa Cup of Nations earlier today, and there are eight faces included who weren’t in the preliminary squad for last month’s World Cup qualifiers.
This time however Broos named a slightly inflated squad, selecting six more players than he did for last month’s preliminary squad.
Broos made one change to the goalkeeping department, with Kaizer Chiefs’ Bruce Bvuma added to the group. Last month Broos only selected four goalkeepers in his preliminary squad.
He also selected one additional defender, with FCSB’s Siyabonga Ngezana, Mamelodi Sundowns’ Terrence Mashego and Stellenbosch’s Fawaaz Basadien included. AmaZulu’s Taariq Fielies and Chiefs’ left back Sfiso Hlanti are the two defenders who miss out, after being in the last prelim squad.
Broos has selected 13 midfielders this time, three more than last month, Sundowns’ Bathusi Aubaas, Chippa United’s Goodman Mosele and Orlando Pirates’ Patrick Maswanganyi added to the list.
There is also one extra forward selected this time, with Iqraam Rayners from Stellenbosch joining the list.
Interestingly, despite his absence from Burnley due to mental health issues, Lyle Foster has been included in the squad.
