Respected agent Glyn Binkin has rubbished the letter that has been doing the rounds on social media that says Teboho Mokoena was going to attend trials with Egypt giants Al Ahly.
The letter that was not issued on any of the Al Ahly socials and refers to them as Al Ahly FC(sic), has spread on social media. It says that Mokoena was supposed to attend trials with the club next month, but that they now won’t happen after Mokoena ‘showed support’ at the Bafana’s arrival on Wednesday for EFF leader Julius Malema.
The EFF leader attended Wednesday’s morning arrival at Or Tambo airport – sitting, as the opposing party, on the same podium alongside Minister Sports, Arts and Culture Zizi Kodwa and SAFA president Danny Jordaan.
“Nonsense and absolutely rubbish,” said a fuming Binkin, who represents Mokoena, to iDiski Times.
“Nothing in the article is true. Nothing at all. I would be very surprised if it even came from Al Ahly. And with all due respect, why would Teboho Mokoena even go on trials anywhere? It is fake news without any substance.”
Mokoena, who still has a contract with Mamelodi Sundowns until 2026, scored a beauty of a free-kick against Morocco in the Round of 16 as Bafana won 2-0.
He also scored one of the shootout penalties when Bafana defeated Cape Verde in the quarter-finals, where Ronwen Williams made history by saving four penalties.
The former SuperSport United star midfielder then scored a late penalty against Nigeria in the semi-final to pull both teams level. This after Percy Tau was hacked behind inside the box, with Nigeria scoring from that phase through Victor Osimhen.
But it was chalked off via VAR and Mokoena sent Stanley Nwabali in the wrong way. However, Mokoena, in the mentally draining spot-kicks against the Super Eagles, missed the first penalty which gave Nigeria an advantage to eventually win the game.
Mokoena also missed a spot-kick in the third and fourth playoff match against DR Congo on Saturday last week, but Williams saved his blushes, saving two penalties as Bafana claimed the bronze medal for the first time in 24 years.
The Masandwana midfielder, along with Williams, was named AFCON Team of the Tournament by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) on Wednesday.
