Broos Explains Decision On Super-sub Morena

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos provided clarity on his decision to bring on two-goal hero Thapelo Morena earlier on at the beginning of the second half.

The Mamelodi Sundowns right-winger replaced Elias Mokwana late half-time, much to wild cheers in front of his home fans to get the job done, netting in the 55th and 76th minutes as Bafana moved second tied on seven points with leaders Rwanda.

South Africa took the lead inside the first minute via Iqraam Rayners from close range before the visitors hit back through Tawanda Chirewa just a minute later.

The match was, however, put beyond bed in the second period through Morena, with Broos explaining why he had to haul off Mokwana for the Sundowns man.

“Well, Thapelo [Morena] did what I asked him during half-time. To look for spaces behind the defence,” Broos said in his post-match interview.

“You see the space was there, we used it very well and Thapelo is very quick so he made a fantastic goal.”

Bafana’s next qualifiers’ clash will be against neighbours Lesotho but only on 17 March 2025, at a venue yet to be decided.
