Broos Explains Mabasa Snub Despite Golden Boot Win

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has explained why red-hot Orlando Pirates striker Tshegofatso Mabasa was snubbed for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers against Nigeria and Zimbabwe next month.

Bafana face the Super Eagles in Uyo on Friday, June 7, and the Warriors on Tuesday, June 11, at the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein as they attempt to make the 2026 global event.

Mabasa finished the 2023/24 DStv Premiership season as the top goal scorer with 16 goals but failed to make the cut in the 23-man squad. Instead, Broos opted for Iqraam Rayners, Oswin Appollis, Themba Zwane and teammates Relebohile Mofokeng and Patrick Maswanganyi as his attacking options.

Broos told the media at the announcement of the squad on Thursday that Mabasa has had his chance in the squad and wasn’t fruitful, with the coach adding that he will see next season if the striker is consistent.

“You know this is what we were told in the beginning of the programme, the choice you have to make,” said Broos.

“And if I take Mabasa you will tell me now why don’t you take Iqraam. So it’s a choice you have to make.

“But Mabasa was already with us and at that moment I’m okay, you can’t decide that on one game but it was a disaster that game for him. And somewhere it was not anymore Mabasa – Mabasa what we thought he was. Now since he was in Pirates okay he is coming again and showing that he is not a bad striker. So let’s wait next season and see if he can go on like this.”

South Africa go into the June qualifiers sitting in second position in Group C with three points from two matches, a point behind group leaders Rwanda.
