Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has explained that he had to take Mothobi Mvala off due to a groin injury and he doesn’t know yet whether he’ll be fit to play on Tuesday.
Broos’ men raced to a 2-0 first-half lead thanks to goals by Percy Tau and Khuliso Mudau, but somewhat lost control of the match in the second interval.
Bafana looked a bit more shaky after Mvala was replaced by Nkosinathi Sibisi after 61 minutes, with many left wondering whether it was a tactical switch or due to injury.
After the match, Broos confirmed that Mvala, just like Evidence Makgopa, had to be taken off due to medical reasons and he doesn’t know yet whether either will be fit to play on Tuesday against Rwanda.
“I don’t know, we will see tomorrow,” the Belgian tactician said.
“With Makgopa, his ankle was already big [swollen], so we will see if it’s really bad or not.
“The other injury is a little bit more serious, Mvala, it’s his groin. We will see if he will be ready to play on Tuesday.
“We will see also tomorrow how things are going. My hope is that he will be ready, also Makgopa, because it’s very difficult also to change now, we have a flight tomorrow already.
“It’s up to the doctor to give us a diagnosis this evening, and we will see whether we need to call up two new players or whether we will travel with both [Makgopa and Mvala] to Rwanda.”
Bafana depart for Rwanda at 16:00 on Sunday and should arrive in Central Africa at 21:00, when a bus drive of around three hours awaits them to get to Butare, where they should arrive at 1am in the morning.
