Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has spoken about the enormous strides made by Mamelodi Sundowns defender Khuliso Mudau in recent months.
When asked about Mudau, who received a lot of media attention following his performance in a friendly against Ivory Coast last month, Broos said he has been impressed by how the Sundowns right back has stepped up in recent time, particularly defensively.
“I will be honest with you,” Broos said on SABCSport.
“When I came here and I saw Mudau play with Sundowns, I wasn’t really happy with him.
“Because in the beginning he was never with us, it was Mobbie, it was Morena…
“But during the last six months, I saw an enormous progression in the way he’s playing. He is not only anymore the right back who is offensively very strong, but he learned a lot defensively.
“When I saw him playing against Cote d’Ivoire, and I see him playing, okay, maybe it’s a difference of quality, in France, that was a big difference. When I saw him playing against Morocco as a right back, and I see him playing now, it’s a big difference.
“So Khuliso progressed enormously on defensively level.
“And I’m very happy with it because we have a good right defender, but also a good right offensive defender. That is important.”
When asked if that means Mudau is now the first-choice right back, he was coy.
“I don’t want to talk in terms like this,” Broos replied.
“But he scored many, many good points against Ivory Coast.”
