Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos says there is no need to play more than one friendly before departing for the Africa Cup Of Nations (AFCON) tournament.
The African spectacle in Morocco will start in just over a month with Bafana wrapping up preparations here at home before leaving for the North. Bafana defeated Zambia 3-1 in a friendly in Gqeberha on Saturday as part of those preparations.
South Africa are in group B with Angola who they play in the opener on 22 December, Egypt who they face on Boxing Day and Zimbabwe who they wrap up their group campaign against three days later.
After the Chipolopolo game Broos was asked if he can still squeeze in more matches before heading to Morocco and he said just one as he doesn’t see the need for more games. Â
“No we will play one game,” he said in the post-match press conference.
“I don’t like to play two or three games before we go. We played enough games against African teams so we don’t have to play against another African team, because [like] Â we don’t know African football.
“We played the last four years nearly only against African teams. So we don’t have to play another two or three games before we go to AFCON we don’t need that.
“It will be a little bit different when we play next year World Cup. That is something else, and the preparation will be different also.
“But now we just try to have a good preparation and that the team is really at 100% when they start, and that we don’t start like we started the last AFCON with a defeat. I want to win that first game.”
Bafana Bafana are in Group B alongside Angola, Egypt and Zimbabwe for the continental shopwiece which kicks off on 21 December.
